About Alyssa
Alyssa is a seasoned floral designer with an eventful flower journey spanning over 15 years. From her humble beginnings as a shop florist in bustling Chicago, she moved across the country three times, to Austin and Portland and is now settled back in Texas on the outskirts of Austin enjoying the sunshine and peaceful quiet of hill country.
Alyssa’s heart beats for two things: floral design and empowering others in the industry through floral education and coaching. With unwavering enthusiasm, she has made it her mission to impart her knowledge and expertise to fellow florists, helping them unlock their creative potential and achieve financial freedom through the captivating art of floral design.
Although she loves the art of floral design, her deepest passion lies in guiding floral entrepreneurs in creating thriving businesses that harmonize with their desired lifestyles. Alyssa derives immense joy from equipping budding florists with the essential skills and strategic business insights needed to flourish in today’s competitive floral market. Her teachings go far beyond mere design techniques; she nurtures each individual’s unique design voice, ensuring that their businesses not only bloom, but flourish.
Through her transparent and robust educational platform, Flowering Minds Education, Alyssa conducts monthly online classes focusing on sustainable design techniques and business strategies relevant to the current market. She loves hosting a site where she can connect like-minded florists to one another, nurturing the industry through connection and community.
When Alyssa isn’t engrossed in art and business, you can find her hiking in the sunshine, swimming, eating sushi, and exploring new places with her husband (and business partner!), Brian, and her son, Django.
Teaching Style
Alyssa truly values authenticity and finding a balance between mastering a craft, but not taking oneself too seriously. From being able to talk for 15 minutes about the serious importance of a single flower’s placement, to shifting gears and laughing about stumbling over some words while teaching, Alyssa’s classes will feel highly informative, yet surprisingly transparent.
Creating floral designs and starting a business can lend to feeling both uncomfortable and vulnerable. It’s our aim that our unscripted videos and casual class environment will provide an atmosphere where our students feel comfortable asking questions, trying new things unsure of the outcome and leave the classroom feeling better equipped to embracing our floral community not just for our similarities, but more importantly, for our differences.
This casual teaching method translates to the online class subscription as well. These videos provide in-depth information from 13 years of saturated experience, broken down into bite-sized unscripted videos of real talk and detailed design demonstrations alternating between business and design topics each week.
The in-person classes are now capped at 5 people and will begin with a demonstration, as Alyssa talks you through her thought process in each flower’s placement. Once the demo is complete, each student will enjoy their own table and supplies to begin their own design. All in-person classes end with capturing each students’ creation so they have a high resolution professional photograph to add to their portfolio.
Design Aesthetic
Focused on satisfying color palettes, movement, balance, depth, negative space and sustainable mechanics – Alyssa’s design aesthetic is informed by classic design principles and a consideration of environmental impact, while being influenced by the visual experimentation found throughout contemporary design.
